Stock market news today: US stocks close higher in countdown to Fed
US stocks, which are heading for their third month of straight losses, closed Tuesday's trading session higher as investors weighed fresh consumer confidence data and looked ahead to the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy decision on Wednesday.
The benchmark S&P 500 (^GSPC) jumped about 0.7% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) and tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) each climbed 0.4% and 0.5%, respectively.
Bonds rallied after the US Treasury cut its estimate of how much the government would need to borrow in the fourth quarter, easing some pressure on stocks. The 10-year Treasury yield (^TNX) finished the trading day flat to trade around 4.87%.
Fed policymakers have hinted that the recent surge in Treasury yields could be a factor in their decision making, given its tightening effect. Investors are highly focused on whether the central bank will hold interest rates steady, as most analysts expect, or hike at their meeting starting Tuesday.

Midwest carbon capture project led by Navigator CO2 Ventures CANCELLED, citing “unpredictable” state regulatory processes
A massive carbon capture project that was planned in the Midwest has been canceled after the company behind it decided to scrap the scheme due to the "unpredictable" nature of state regulatory processes.
Navigator CO2 Ventures' plan was to blanket a large swatch of the Midwest with its so-called Heartland Greenway pipeline, which would have captured 15 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually from Midwest ethanol plants and permanently stored it underground.
The "green" cult is obsessed with CO2, believing it to be a "pollutant" that must be stripped out of the air and sent underground far away from humans in order to stop the planet from "warming." This is the cult mythology behind the carbon capture process.
One of the biggest planned projects of its kind, the Navigator CO2 Heartland Greenway scheme was supposed to be one of the pillars of fake president Joe Biden's carbon capture and storage (CCS) climate strategy to stop climate change. It was also supposed to help the ethanol industry meet its emissions goals, which will no longer happen with the help of Navigator CO2.
Farmers, environmentalists forged "unusual alliance" to stop Navigator CO2's disastrous carbon pipeline scheme
Concerning the aforementioned Summit Carbon Solutions project, that one is still moving forward despite similar setbacks and strong opposition from both farmers and environmentalists, which together helped stop the Navigator CO2 project.
According to Summit, it is still "well-positioned to add additional plants and communities to our project footprint," with its first pipeline scheduled to be functional starting in 2026 – Summit's original timeline was to have the pipeline operational in 2024.
It is not every day that typically conservative farmers partner with the likes of the Sierra Club to tackle a threat, but this is what happened in the Midwest in a rare display of unity by the farming community and environmentalists, who together stopped Navigator CO2's disastrous plans for ripping up the Midwest landscape in order to blanket it with CO2 pipelines.
"The people united to resist Navigator at every level, in every corner of every state, and we won," celebrated Jess Mazour, an Iowa organizer with the Sierra Club, which patently opposes the installation of carbon pipelines.
"I, too, oppose carbon pipelines," wrote one commenter on a Watts Up With That story about this rare victory in the fight against green tyranny. "[CO2] should be freely available to enter our deficient atmosphere, to the benefit of plants and carbon-based life itself."
In other words, because CO2 is more of a nutrient than a pollutant, it should be allowed to continue to exist in the atmosphere, just like it has since the beginning of time.
Another pointed out that highly polluting ethanol production would not even be a concern, environmentally speaking, if the industry was not heavily subsidized by the government to avoid allowing for domestic drilling of natural earth-based fuels like oil and gas.
"I find it difficult to believe that growing food crops to convert to fuel can ever make true economic and energetic sense once the subsidies are removed," this person wrote. "The fossil fuel inputs to grow the crop are a lot more than non-zero."
"Yes, it keeps farmers on the land. If they were growing, and selling, food for people in far-flung places, that would probably also benefit the environment in those places."

White House retracts Biden’s admission of pushing for Gaza invasion delay until more American hostages are released
President Joe Biden was about to board Air Force One on Friday to head to his beach house in Delaware and spend the weekend there when a reporter shouted at him, asking if he wanted Israel to delay the ground invasion. The president answered "Yes," and proceeded to enter the aircraft.
The White House was reported to have been scrambling to backtrack what Biden declared to stick to their narrative that the United States is all in with Israel's anticipated attack on Gaza. Ben LaBolt, White House communications director, immediately walked it back saying the president may have misheard the question. "The president was far away. He didn't hear the full question," said LaBolt. "The question sounded like 'Would you like to see more hostages released?' He wasn't commenting on anything else."
A recent report indicated that Biden "privately" gave Israel the green light for the Gaza invasion and on Thursday night an invasion appeared imminent. But the next day, two American hostages, mother and daughter Judith Raanan, 59, and Natalie, 17, were released by Hamas after being kidnapped on October 7 and held in Gaza for 13 days. The said release led to calls from some to delay the assault until more hostages could be released. A further 200 hostages are believed to remain in the Iran-backed militant group's captivity.
Earlier, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby claimed they were not "interfering" in Israel's military operations. But he said that the issue of hostages was "front and center on the president's mind when he met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu." The release was reportedly negotiated by Qatari mediators, with the involvement of the Red Cross.
Moreover, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) insisted that there could be no delay in their invasion of the enclave. IDF spokesman Major Doron Spielman even accused Hamas of releasing the hostages as a tactic to halt the invasion but this won’t work, Spielman emphasized. "There was going to be no break in Israel’s effort to destroy Hamas," he told CNN.
Netanyahu celebrated the release of the Americans and said they would work to free the rest but added that the fight against Hamas would continue 'simultaneously' with the negotiations. "Two of our hostages are home. We will not ease the effort to bring back all abductees and those missing," he said in a statement posted to social media. "Simultaneously, we keep fighting until a victory is reached."

Top US officials make case for Ukraine aid
The US secretaries of state and defense urged Congress Tuesday to sustain support for Ukraine and warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to use the Israel-Hamas war to reduce Western support for Kyiv.
President Joe Biden has combined military aid for Ukraine and Israel in a proposed $106 billion package, but a significant number of Republicans in Congress — among whom support for Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion is faltering — are opposed to linking the two.
“I can guarantee you that without our support, Putin will be successful,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told a Senate hearing on the supplemental funding request.
“If we pull the rug out from under them now, Putin will only get stronger and he will be successful in doing what he wants to do in acquiring his neighbor’s sovereign territory,” he said.
Washington is by far the biggest donor of military aid to Ukraine, committing some $43.9 billion since Russian forces invaded in February 2022 — assistance that has helped Kyiv regain ground seized by Moscow.
But Republican opposition has put future assistance for Kyiv in doubt, and the US government has had to rely on previously authorized aid in the absence of new funding from Congress.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken told the same hearing that a halt to US assistance for Ukraine could encourage other countries to follow suit.
“This is an instance where we’ve seen very significant burden-sharing that would almost certainly go away if we go away,” he said.
– Protests during hearing –
“The message it would send… to each and every one of these countries is that the United States is abandoning ship — well, we may as well do, too.”
Blinken said Putin is meanwhile “trying to take advantage of the Hamas attack on Israel in the hopes that it will distract us… and that it will result in the United States pulling back its resources” from Ukraine.
Hamas militants carried out a shock cross-border attack from Gaza this month that Israeli officials say killed more than 1,400 people, prompting Washington to rush military aid to Israel and sparking fears in Kyiv that backing for its war against invading Russian forces could suffer.
Israel’s retaliatory bombardment has killed more than 8,500 people, according to the Gaza health ministry, sparking widespread anger in the region and around the world.
The hearing was repeatedly interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters, some of whom cried out “Ceasefire now,” “Palestinians are not animals” and “Shame on you all” before being removed from the room.
Some two dozen people also raised hands covered in paint in a symbol of the bloodshed in the Gaza Strip, while several wore messages of “Free Gaza” written on their arms and held signs demanding “No more $$$ 4 Israel.”
Blinken also discussed what might come after the current conflict, saying the Palestinian Authority should retake control of the Gaza Strip from Hamas, which has ruled the territory since 2007.
“At some point, what would make the most sense would be for an effective and revitalized Palestinian Authority to have governance and ultimately security responsibility for Gaza,” Blinken said.
“It may involve international agencies that would help provide for both security and governance,” Blinken said, adding that there cannot be a “reversion of the status quo with Hamas running Gaza.”

Yemen declares war with Israel
Yemen has offically declared war on Israel, following a series of coordinated missile and drone attacks on Tuesday, October 31.
The official spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, Brigadier General Yahya Saree Anu, made the announcement, emphasizing the operation as the "third operation in support of the oppressed brethren in Palestine."
The attacks, which included a substantial number of ballistic and winged missiles, along with drone deployments, targeted enemy installations within the occupied territories. General Saree vowed to persist with even more precise missile and drone strikes until Israel's aggression ceases on Palestinians, specifically highlighting the need for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to halt operations in the Gaza sector.
Dr. Sam Youssef Ph.D, M.Sc., DPT.
Earlier on the same day, the IDF reported intercepting a "land-to-land" class missile aimed at the southern Israeli city of Eilat, which was launched from the Red Sea area. In response, the Israeli military destroyed an unidentified "aerial target" over the Red Sea.
General Yahya Saree reiterated Yemen's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, asserting the full rights of the Palestinian people to defend themselves. He also pointed out that the bombardment on Gaza was facilitated by the support of the United States and the West.
This marks the third operation conducted by Yemen in solidarity with the Palestinian people over the past three weeks. The Yemeni Armed Forces remain resolute in their commitment to this cause, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the ongoing war.

Gaza now a ‘graveyard’ for children – UN agency
The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reiterated its call for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, saying the conflict is killing thousands of kids in Gaza and putting many more at risk from the violence and a water crisis.
“Gaza has become a graveyard for thousands of children,” UNICEF spokesman James Elder told reporters on Tuesday in Geneva, “It’s a living hell for everyone else.” He noted that more than 3,450 children in the Palestinian enclave have already been killed, and the death toll rises significantly every day.
Elder made his comments as Israel escalated its ground offensive in Gaza in response to the Hamas terrorist attacks that killed an estimated 1,400 people on October 7. Gaza’s water system also has been crippled by the conflict, contributing to an overall death toll of more than 8,000 in the territory.
“The threats to children go beyond bombs and mortars,” Elder said. He added that Gaza’s water production capacity has been cut to 5% of its normal level, putting more than 1 million children at risk of dying from dehydration. Many children have been sickened by drinking salty water out of desperation.
Elder noted that even before the latest war between Israel and Hamas, more than three-fourths of Gaza’s children were identified as needing mental health support because of the trauma they had faced. “When the fighting stops, the cost to children and their communities will be borne out for generations to come,” he said.
With Gaza’s children “living through a nightmare,” the UNICEF spokesman said, Israel must end its siege of the territory. He called for all access crossings into Gaza to be open, allowing for the safe passage of food, water, fuel, medical supplies, and other humanitarian aid. “And if there is no ceasefire – no water, no medicine, and no release of abducted children – then we hurtle toward even greater horrors afflicting innocent children.”
Israel’s government has blasted the UN, arguing that the body has not sufficiently condemned the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7. West Jerusalem’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, announced on Monday that members of his delegation would respond by donning yellow stars, alluding to the labels that Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust. “From this day on, each time you look at me, you will remember what staying silent in the face of evil means,” he said in a speech to the UN Security Council.

US should commit 100 nuclear weapons to defend South Korea – lobbyists
The US and South Korea should collaborate to modernize about 100 tactical nuclear weapons to bolster Seoul’s defenses against an alleged growing threat from Pyongyang, according to a recommendation from two defense industry-linked think tanks on Monday.
North Korea has “already established a nuclear weapon force that could pose an existential threat” to South Korea’s security and is “on the verge” of establishing a similar threat to the US, the Asan Institute for Policy Studies claimed in a report titled ‘Options for Strengthening ROK (Republic of Korea) Nuclear Assurance’. The study was conducted in conjunction with American military industry lobby group, the RAND Corporation.
Approximately 100 US nuclear weapons should be modernized at South Korea's expense, the study recommended, adding that they should be housed on US soil but be rapidly deployable to support Seoul’s defensive requirements.
“[North Korean leader] Kim Jong-un appears to be planning a force of at least 300 to 500 nuclear weapons,” the authors of the study claimed, suggesting that Pyongyang could break the 300-weapon threshold by around 2030.
The report stated that North Korea’s current nuclear capabilities include weapons that could kill about 2 million people if launched towards its southern neighbor. Pyongyang has ambitions of using its nuclear arsenal in order to test Washington’s resolve towards its alliance with Seoul, it added, also alleging that the North hopes to “dominate South Korea without having to invade it.”
It further recommended a process to pressure North Korea to relent in its nuclear weapons program by storing some US weapons in South Korea “for both symbolic and operational purposes,” and having “all or part of the nuclear weapons on a US ballistic missile submarine operating in the Pacific to target North Korea.”
In April, US President Joe Biden and his South Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk Yeol, signed the Washington Declaration, in which the US agreed to extend its military deterrence partnership with Seoul amid an increase in North Korean ballistic missile testing.
Pyongyang has conducted numerous missile tests this year, including an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that traveled for almost 1,000km (620 miles) before splashing down in waters west of Japan. This led to increased US and South Korean naval drills in the area.
Last month, North Korea also held a simulation of a tactical nuclear strike that included two long-range missiles. The exercise was intended to “warn enemies,” North Korea’s KCNA news agency said.
The Asan Institute of Policy Studies describes itself as a “non-partisan think tank” dedicated to “undertaking policy-relevant research to foster domestic, regional and international environments” regarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

FBI Director Wray Grilled By Congress, Reveals Iranian Sleeper Cell Assassins In US ‘Have Made Attempts’ To Kill Americans & Could Attack
FBI Director Chris Wray revealed during a Congressional hearing on Tuesday that Iran has made assassination attempts against high-ranking current and former US govt. officials, including right here on American soil.
During his Tuesday live show, Infowars founder Alex Jones explained the American Deep State is prepared to either “allow Iran to attack” or “say Iran attacked.”
Of course, as Jones noted, “The media won’t point out they brought in all these people by the millions. Hundreds of thousands of military-aged men from the Middle East. They’re getting ready to make their move, folks.”
Elsewhere during Wray’s congressional testimony, the Biden FBI head also told Americans we’re “in a dangerous period” due to threats of terrorism.
Director Wray even admitted Hamas could attack inside America as they did inside Israel earlier this month.
Many internet users pointed out America’s wide open borders have allowed countless terror cells to infiltrate the country.

Veiled woman screaming 'allahu akbar' allegedly threatening to blow up Paris Metro shot by police: report
A woman in Paris was allegedly screaming “Allahu Akbar” and making threats to blow up the train she was on Tuesday, Mirror UK reports. The police subsequently opened fire at her, allegedly injuring her stomach.
The 38-year-old woman who has not been named was dressed in an Islamic veil and was threatening to “blow herself up” with the train, a source reports. Armed officers arrived at the scene near Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand station after a terrified passenger called emergency services.
They opened fire after the woman would not comply with their warnings and is said to have shouted “Allahu Akbar.”
The source said that “Fearing for their safety, the police opened fire around 9:20 am She was then injured in the stomach and evacuated immediately.” Police have since said officers made the right decision to "neutralise the woman".
The nearby Metro and suburban train station that services the Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand station have been evacuated, according to local police. Authorities said the station would not reopen until 4 pm. Paris police said that no explosives were found on the woman, the train, or the station.
France has been on heightened anti-terror alert after just earlier this month a man shouting "Allahu akbar" at Gambetta High School in the city of Arras stabbed a teacher to death and left several other people injured on Friday, October 13, the day that the former leader of Hamas called for a “Day of Jihad.”

Study reveals 1,000% spike in congenital syphilis in Mississippi
A report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has revealed that the U.S. is seeing an alarming upward trend in infants born with congenital syphilis (CS). Data has found that there is an alarming 1,000 percent spike in one specific state – Mississippi.
Syphilis is one of the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) tracked by the government, along with chlamydia, gonorrhea and HIV, which are all on the rise. From 2020 to 2021, amid the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the country saw a 30.5 percent increase in CS cases.
The CDC report studied discharge data from Mississippi hospitals between 2016 and 2022 and found that congenital syphilis had increased tenfold. The total number of babies diagnosed with CS, which is passed down from pregnant mothers to their babies, during the seven-year time frame amounted to 367 infants.
The retrospective study was a collaboration between the Mississippi State Department of Health and the Mississippi Hospital Association.
The results also found that newborns with CS were more likely to be born prematurely at less than 37 weeks and from mothers who used addictive and illegal drugs.
Babies with CS also had lower birth weights of about three pounds compared to babies without CS.
Additionally, infants with CS spent more days in the hospital, and the cost of their treatment was over four times as much.
Other findings revealed that an estimated 97 percent were considered newborns (under 28 days old), over 71 percent were African American and nearly 60 percent of babies were born to mothers living in nonurban counties.
The cohort was half male and half female, with most of the babies diagnosed with CS upon delivery.
Although most infants with CS were black, the percentage increase in cases was larger among white infants, with an alarming increase of at least 2,600 percent compared to just over 1,000 percent.
The increase in CS cases is a cause for concern among state health officials.
The authors wrote that their investigation confirms that "the rapid rise of CS hospitalizations in Mississippi is a serious public health concern because of its grave social and health-related consequences." They also acknowledged that the study had limitations, such as limited data on prenatal care, perinatal syphilis treatment and laboratory diagnostic tests.
The research team advised that their study provided comprehensive data on a population level, allowing for a thorough, statewide assessment that shows a worrying upward trend.
