"Tough Place": Implosion Of Downtown San Francisco Forces McDonald's To Close After 30 Years
The unraveling of San Francisco's office sector has been stunning so far. The once-thriving urban center is now grappling with a record-high 30% vacancy rate in office buildings, attributed mainly to the shift towards remote and hybrid work in a post-Covid era, as well as a mass exodus of companies who no longer felt their office workers were safe because 'defund the police' policies backfired and sparked a citywide violent crime tsunami. Now, the ripple effects of a plunge in office workers, no longer walking the streets and spending money at brick-and-mortar shops, have darkened the city's recovery.
On Friday, McDonald's restaurant at 235 Front St. in the Financial District served its last Big Mac after a three-decade run, according to San Francisco Business Times.
Scott Rodrick, the McDonald's franchise owner, said the "post-pandemic realities of operating the downtown restaurant simply became unbearable for the franchisee and McDonald's Corp."
"The economics of running a franchised restaurant in San Francisco continue to be a challenge, particularly in a downtown that is impacted by high office building vacancy rates and visitor trends that have not recovered since the pandemic," Rodrick wrote in an email to the local media outlet.
Rodrick said San Francisco "continues to be a very tough place to own and operate a restaurant business, irrespective of price point." He said traffic at the restaurant had dropped off a cliff.
"Office building vacancies, the environmental atmosphere of downtown sidewalks and a tepid return by tourists and conventioneers all drove the decision" to close the restaurant, Rodrick wrote.
This is a troubling development for the commercial real estate industry because the crisis is spreading. And given that retail businesses rely heavily on office workers - this spells disaster for any recovery in the local economy in the short term.
For retail shops to thrive, foot traffic generated by office workers and tourists is needed.
In recent weeks, Marc Benioff, the CEO of Salesforce, San Fran's largest employer and anchor tenant in the city's tallest skyscraper, urged radical Democrats in City Hall to reverse course on defunding the police. This call from Benioff, alongside other top business leaders, suggests a growing separation from previously 'woke' policies pushed by City Hall. However, these calls to reverse disastrous progressive policies could be too late.
We noted earlier this year that pressure on Democrat Mayor London Breed was increasing as she embarrassingly reversed course on her defunding the police initiatives.
Perhaps in the next local election, law-abiding taxpayers in San Francisco may consider demanding accountability from Democratic leaders for the city's collapse, which has led to some areas in the metro area being comparable to the hellholes of Detroit and Baltimore City.

Trump unleashes on stand: 'The fraud is on the court, not on me'

Former President Donald Trump slammed his civil fraud case as a “political witch hunt” on the witness stand Monday, calling Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James a “political hack” and lashing out at the judge, according to multiple reports.
The outburst followed a less eventful second portion of Trump’s testimony, where he answered questions about Mar-a-Lago and his Aberdeen, Scotland golf club with few interruptions from the judge, according to reports. Judge Arthur Engoron had earlier called a break after repeatedly asking Trump to focus on the questions, telling Trump’s lawyer this is “not a political rally” and to “control” his client, according to The Hill.
“It’s a disgrace that a case like this is going on; all you have to do is read the legal scholars — the papers — and you’ll know,” Trump said, the Hill reported. “This is a political witch hunt.”
“He called me a fraud and he didn’t know anything about me,” Trump said in reference to the judge, CNN reported.
“Read my opinion perhaps or for the first time,” Engoron responded, according to the outlet.
“I think it’s fraudulent, the decision,” Trump said, per CNN. “The fraud is on the court, not on me.”
Engoron ruled prior to the trial’s start that Trump and his business committed fraud by inflating his net worth and the value of his assets, deceiving banks and insurance companies.
“Even yesterday, she’s out there saying ‘fraud, fraud.’ The fraud is her,” Trump said in reference to the attorney general, per The Hill.
Trump has attacked James for bringing the case against him before.
He said said earlier this month that she “defrauded the public” with the trial. In September, he attacked James on Truth Social for bringing a case against him “instead of fighting murder and violent crime, which is killing New York State.”

NEW: Obama’s Top Adviser Suggests Biden Should Drop Out: ‘Stakes Too Dramatic To Ignore’
David Axelrod, the strategist who masterminded President Barack Obama’s come-from-behind victory over Hillary Clinton in 2008, said it’s time for President Joe Biden to throw in the towel amid new polling that shows the Democrat president badly trailing former President Donald Trump in five of six swing states.
Writing on X, Axelrod said it would be “wise” for President Biden to consider stepping aside and allowing the next generation of Democrats to jockey for their party’s nomination.
“Only @JoeBiden can make this decision. If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?” Axelrod asked in a thread on X obtained by Fox News.
“It’s very late to change horses,” added Axelrod but suggested that recent polling proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Biden is in trouble.
The embattled president trails President Trump in Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, all states he won in 2020. Biden holds just a two percent lead in Wisconsin. The numbers contain startling nuggets of data showing that Biden and Trump are essentially tied among young voters while the Republican frontrunner earns up to 22 percent support from Black voters in states where he leads. That amount is unprecedented for a Republican candidate in the post-Civil Rights era.
Axelrod orchestrated Obama’s plan to pick Biden as his vice presidential candidate in 2008, a move designed to shore up the lack of enthusiasm for him among working-class white voters. President Biden, who hails from Scranton, Pennsylvania, has spent decades in office leaning into his blue-collar roots, though today trails President Trump by dozens of points among white voters, especially those with less than a four-year college education.
Biden’s “biggest liability,” Axelrod added, is his advanced age. As the oldest-ever U.S. president, Biden has suffered a disastrous number of trips, stumbles, and other senior moments that have cemented concerns about his age into the minds of voters who believe by wide margins that he is not fit to serve a second four-year term. And while President Trump’s disapproval numbers from voters are also high, Axelrod said President Biden would be making a grave mistake to believe that voters who refuse to break for his likely opponent.
“[T]he stakes of miscalculation here are too dramatic to ignore,” wrote Axelrod.

Biden talks 'pauses' in Gaza strikes with Netanyahu – media
US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reportedly talked about using tactical pauses in West Jerusalem’s military offensive in Gaza to enable more aid shipments to get into the Palestinian enclave and to negotiate more releases of hostages held by Hamas.
No decisions were made as a result of Monday’s talks, but the two leaders agreed to continue discussing the issue in the days ahead, Reuters reported, citing White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. “You can expect that we’re going to continue to advocate for temporary and localized pauses in the fighting,” Kirby said. “We consider ourselves at the beginning of this conversation, not at the end of it.”
Some politicians in Biden’s own party have argued that the president’s 2024 re-election bid is threatened by voter disgust over his support for Israel’s incursion in Gaza, which has killed more than 10,000 Palestinians. US Representative Rashida Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat, went so far on Friday as to accuse Biden of “supporting the genocide of the Palestinian people.”
Although Biden’s administration has repeatedly argued that a general ceasefire in Israel’s war with Hamas wouldn’t be appropriate, the White House has pushed for humanitarian pauses in recent days amid increasing political pressure and the rising Palestinian death toll. Netanyahu, who met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday morning, said later in the day that Hamas would have to release its Israeli hostages before any pauses to the offensive.
Fewer than 30 aid trucks entered Gaza in the past 24 hours, according to the White House. “We know, gotta get more trucks in,” Kirby said. “It’s still just a trickle. Gotta get more people out. Still just a trickle.”
Hamas fighters killed an estimated 1,400 people during surprise attacks against villages in southern Israel on October 7, and they took more than 200 people as hostages. Four of the hostages, including two Americans, were released, and an Israeli soldier was rescued by Israeli troops. As of Friday, the Israeli Defense Forces estimated that Hamas was still holding 241 hostages.
In addition to possibly enabling hostage releases, tactical pauses could help get foreign nationals and wounded Palestinian civilians out of Gaza, a White House official said on Friday. Halts to the Israeli strikes would also make it easier for civilians to move out of northern Gaza, where the offensive is focused. However, the unidentified official reiterated Washington’s opposition to a general ceasefire. “In a situation in which a terrorist group takes 200 hostages and kills 1,400 people and is hiding under tunnels, including the leaders, a ceasefire is just not really the word to use.”

African nations recall diplomats from Israel
South Africa and Chad have joined the growing list of nations withdrawing their diplomatic staff from Israel, condemning West Jerusalem for killing thousands of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip as it tries to destroy Hamas.
“A genocide under the watch of the international community cannot be tolerated,” South African Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni told reporters on Monday in Pretoria. “Another holocaust in the history of humankind is not acceptable.”
South African cabinet members decided at a meeting last week to recall the country’s three diplomats stationed in Tel Aviv for “consultation,” Ntshavheni said. She also hinted that action may be taken against Israel’s ambassador to South Africa, Eli Belotserkovsky, for allegedly making disparaging remarks about those who oppose the Israeli incursion in Gaza. She added that his role in Pretoria is “becoming very untenable.”
Chad recalled its charge d’affaires to Israel on Saturday, according to a government statement on Monday. “Chad condemns the loss of human lives of many innocent civilians and calls for a ceasefire leading to a lasting solution to the Palestinian question,” the statement said. The central African country restored diplomatic relations with Israel in 2019, more than four decades after ties between the two governments were severed.
Israel’s latest war with Hamas began on October 7, when the militant group launched surprise attacks that killed an estimated 1,400 people. Hamas fighters also kidnapped more than 200 people and took them back to Gaza as hostages. The Israeli response has left more than 10,000 Palestinians dead, according to local health officials.
South Africa and Chad follow seven other countries in punishing Israel diplomatically. Bolivia broke off its diplomatic relations with Israel on October 31. Türkiye, Jordan, Bahrain, Honduras, Colombia and Chile recalled their ambassadors to Israel. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters on Saturday that he had cut off contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying, “We have given up on him.”
South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said it was important for Pretoria to signal its concern over the Israeli incursion in Gaza and call for a ceasefire. “We need to have this engagement with our officials because we are extremely concerned at the continued killing of children and innocent civilians in the Palestinian territory, and we believe the nature of the response by Israel has become one of collective punishment,” she told reporters on Monday.

Jordanian Air Force Conducts Unprecedented Medical Supply Airdrop Over Gaza
The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 10,000 and there are a reported tens of thousands of civilians wounded after weeks of Israel's aerial bombardment and ground assault in response to Hamas' Oct.7 massacres against soldiers and civilians in southern Israel.
Hamas on Monday has claimed that 250,000 houses, apartments and structures have been destroyed in the Gaza Strip thus far, and hospitals have reiterated they are fast running out fuel needed to run vital generators. Neighboring Jordan has embarked on a rare intervention in Gaza, announcing that its air force had dropped "urgent medical aid" to a Gaza hospital which has been run under Jordanian government oversight since 2009.
Image Credit: Jordanian Air Force C-130 (Wiki Commons)
An Israeli official has told Axios that the Jordanian air drop "was conducted in coordination with Israel's military." This despite that the two countries whose relations are governed by a historic peace treaty have witnessed ties approaching near breaking point in the last several days.
The supplies fell via parachutes after the hospital said it is running out of medical supplies to treat thousands of wounded, and also at a moment aid convoys have been held up at the Rafah crossing with Egypt.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II confirmed the airdrop in an early Monday statement, saying on X, "Our fearless air force personnel air-dropped at midnight urgent medical aid to the Jordanian field hospital in Gaza."
“This is our duty to aid our brothers and sisters injured in the war on Gaza," he added. "We will always be there for our Palestinian brethren."
This rare coordination with Israel happened despite Jordan just five days ago moving to recall its ambassadors from Israel in protest of the "humanitarian catastrophe" in the Gaza Strip.
Jordan also has very close relations with the US military and intelligence services, yet its domestic situation is tense and delicate, given that over half of the entire Jordanian population is of Palestinian origin. The Pentagon has training bases in the country, in cooperation with Jordanian forces.
But separately, Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh also on Monday issued the strongest warning yet aimed at Israel from Amman. He said any move by Israel to initiate a mass displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and West Bank would be seen as a "declaration of war".
"The continuation of the sinful aggression against the Gaza Strip, with all its crimes, constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law," Khasawneh said. And that's when he declared:
"It is necessary to stop the impunity and protection that gives Israel the license to kill Palestinian civilians. International humanitarian law prohibits and criminalizes targeting and killing civilians without exception," the Jordanian prime minister added.
Any attempts or creating conditions to displace Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank are a red line and Jordan will be considered as a “declaration of war”...
Since the start of the conflict last month, Jordanian officials have also warned of the potential of the conflict to spread, threatening "the security of the entire region."
Regional stability related to unrest in Israel or on its borders has historically centered on the separate peace deals Israel has made (brokered under the US) with both Egypt and Jordan. In return, Washington pumps billions in military and foreign aid to the Egyptian and Jordanian governments.

Nashville police investigate published images of manifesto from trans shooter at Christian school
Nashville police issued a public response after the release of three allegedly leaked pages of the handwritten “manifesto” purportedly written by the trans-identifying shooter who murdered six people at a Christian elementary school this year.
Conservative comedian and podcaster Steven Crowder on Monday morning published images of three handwritten notebook pages that he said were from the manifesto of Audrey Hale, the 28-year-old transgender-identifying shooter who killed three children and three adults at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee in March. Hale was fatally shot by police at the scene.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said in a Monday afternoon statement they were investigating the dissemination of the documents that were “not MNPD crime scene images.”
“The MNPD is in communication with the Metropolitan Department of Law as an investigation, begun this morning, continues into the dissemination of three photographs of writings during an on-line discussion about Covenant School,” the department said. “The photographs are not MNPD crime scene images.”
“The police department has been in contact with a representative of Covenant families,” the statement continued. “Police department counselors are available to assist them in coping with the emotional trauma caused by the dissemination.”
Daily Signal journalist Mary-Margaret Olohan stated Monday on Twitter/X that a spokeswoman for the Nashville PD said “writings from the shooter are part of ‘ongoing legal action’ and therefore, the department cannot say whether Crowder’s documents are from Hale’s manifesto.”
The comment from the department came after Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell said in a statement that the city was investigating “how these images could have been released.”
“That investigation may involve local, state, and federal authorities. I am deeply concerned with the safety, security, and well-being of the Covenant families and all Nashvillians who are grieving,” O’Connell said.
In the photos of the manifesto pages released by Crowder, Hale expressed left-wing racial and class animosity, referring to her white victims as “crackers” and expressing disgust for children who went “to fancy private schools with those fancy khakis + sports backpacks w/ their daddies mustangs + convertibles.” She also said that she was “ready to die” and that she hoped she would accumulate a “high death count” in her rampage.
“Can’t believe I’m doing this, but I’m ready,” she wrote. “I hope my victims aren’t.”
Hale murdered three nine-year-old children and three school staff members in their sixties in her violent attack, LifeSiteNews previously reported. The children were identified as Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney, and Hallie Scruggs, the youngest daughter of Chad Scruggs, senior pastor at Nashville’s Covenant Presbyterian Church. School custodian Mike Hill, 61, substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, 61, and head of school Katherine Koonce, 60, were also slain.
Before responding to the leaked pages on Monday, Nashville police have refused to release the manifesto despite having obtained access to it in March and despite the fact that Nashville police suggested shortly after the attack there was reason to believe that the killer’s reported transgender identity played a role in her decision to target the Christian school.
On April 3, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department released an update on its investigation into the shooting without releasing any of the documents to the public.
“In the collective writings by Hale found in her vehicle in the school parking lot, and others later found in the bedroom of her home, she documented, in journals, her planning over a period of months to commit mass murder at The Covenant School,” the department said.
The police said at the time that Hale’s motive had “not been established,” but that Hale did “conside[r] the actions of other mass murderers.”
Later that month, Nashville police chief John Drake said the manifesto would be released to the public in short order, but the department never actually released the documents, The Daily Wire noted.
The department has subsequently been hit with several lawsuits by organizations and news outlets calling for the public release of the document.
“It’s not up to the police or government officials to decide whether a shooter’s writings are relevant to the public,” Daily Wire podcaster Matt Walsh said Monday ahead of the department’s statement.
“When children are massacred, the community has the right to know exactly what happened and why,” Walsh said.
The Daily Wire and Fox 17 have stated that they have confirmed the authenticity of the images released by Crowder.

BREAKING: Nashville mayor launches investigation into leak of trans Nashville shooter's manifesto
Following the leak of the transgender Nashville shooter’s alleged manifesto on Monday morning, Mayor Freddie O’Connell said that the city has launched an investigation into how the images of the writings were released.
"I have directed Wally Dietz, Metro’s Law Director, to initiate an investigation into how these images could have been released. That investigation may involve local, state, and federal authorities. I am deeply concerned with the safety, security, and well-being of the Covenant families and all Nashvillians who are grieving," O’Connell said in a statement, according to WSMV.
"This incident naturally invokes additional emotional trauma, and families or individuals who need support should reach out to professionals at National Alliance on Mental Illness (615-891-4724), MNPD support counselors (615-862-7773) or MNPS Family Information Center (615-259-INFO)."
On Monday morning, Steven Crowder released three handwritten pages of what he said were Audrey Hale’s manifesto. These highlighted an anti-white sentiment held by the shooter that killed three young students and three staff members of the Covenant School on March 27, 2023.
The pages apparently show Hale planning the day of the shooting down to the minute, including in all capital letters at the top of the page, "DEATH DAY." A source with the Louder with Crowder show told The Post Millennial that they received the photographs of Hale's notebook from a "source near law enforcement."
"I’m a little nervous, but excited too, been excited for the past two weeks," Hale wrote.
"There were several times I could have been caught, especially in the summer of 2021. None of that matters now, I’m almost an hour and 7 minutes away."
"Can’t believe I’m doing this, but I’m ready," Hale wrote, adding, "I hope my victims aren’t."
"Kill those Kids!!!" another page began, dated February 3, 2023.
"Those crackers, going to private fancy schools, with those fancy khakis + sports backpacks... w/ their daddies mustangs + convertibles. f*ck you little skits," Hale wrote.
Hale added: “Wanna kill all you little crackers!!! Bunch of little faggots w/ your white privileges f*ck you faggots."

FBI Captured Recruiting at 'Pride' Event
If the next generation of FBI field agents are seen making arrests adorning blue hair and with sex toys on their tactical belts, we might have a pretty good indicator as to why.
The bureau said on X (formerly Twitter) that it had used a recent so-called LGBT “pride” event in North Carolina as a place to find new recruits.
It isn’t clear if agents witnessed any nude adults performing dances for children, but the FBI’s official X account was awfully proud to share that it is now trying to mine talent from such events.
The bureau was also sure to capitalize the word “Pride” so as to express to the world how important it views celebrations of debauchery that don’t have an American flag in sight.
“Recently, FBICharlotte participated in a Pride event where the #FBI spoke to attendees about career opportunities and the work the Bureau does to protect civil rights,” the FBI said.
The corrupt agency added, “Visit http://fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/outreach#Programs to learn about opportunities to participate in #FBI community programs near you.”
The FBI, which was handing out “pride” flags, was predictably obliterated by rational people in their responses to the post:
Now, not all people who identify as part of the LGBT community would definitely make terrible federal agents.
Only those who closely knew Rock Hudson were aware that he was not even mildly interested in the numerous potential female suitors who were out there willing to marry him during the height of his career.
This is about the bureau and the politicized Department of Justice.
These are entities that target conservatives while ignoring the kind of far-left rioting and violence the country saw play out in major cities across the country through 2020.
The FBI cannot set up a recruiting station at a “pride” event and then go on to claim ever again and under its current leadership that it is a force for blind justice.
The LGBT community’s co-opted rainbow imagery is nothing if not a political symbol. The FBI has put the world on notice — not only about its priorities, but also about which side of the cultural divide it sits on.
This is not our grandparents’ FBI. This is no longer an agency that seeks to prevent and solve crimes. This is an FBI that spies on Christians in their churches and then aligns itself with open sin.
While FBI Director Christopher Wray was warning last week that Americans faced the potential of terror attacks and even warned that his agency had gaps in intelligence, agents in Charlotte were planning to make their presence known at a political event.
It is disgraceful.

Canada Set to Take 500,000 Palestinian Refugees Due to “Lenient” Immigration Policy
The displacement of Palestinian civilians in Gaza due to the ongoing war with Israel could lead to millions of refugees, which Israel suggested a large portion could be sent to Canada.
The Israeli Intelligence Ministry floated a plan in a “concept paper,” which said Canada would be an ideal candidate for Palestinian refugees due to PM Justin Trudeau’s “lenient” immigration policy.
According to talk on Parliament Hill, the number of refugees that could be headed for Canada could be as high as 500,000.
Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Marc Miller strongly suggested Canada would be quite prepared to accept the shipment of refugees.
While discussing his 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan, a reporter asked Miller about the proposals.
Miller did not dismiss the question; instead, he wasn’t prepared to “speculate” on the prospect of accepting the refugees.
He then reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to accept refugees during times of crisis.
“We are open to those fleeing war. This is a war,” he said.
Watch
If Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s infamous social media post from 2017 is anything to go by, then it looks like Canada will be a top destination for Palestinian refugees.
Trudeau wrote at the time:
“To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada.”
The document notes that the proposal “is liable to be complicated in terms of international legitimacy,”
“In our assessment, fighting after the population is evacuated would lead to fewer civilian casualties compared to what could be expected if the population were to remain.”
However the Palestinian Authority has rejected the idea.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, said:
“We are against transfer to any place, in any form, and we consider it a red line that we will not allow to be crossed.”
“What happened in 1948 will not be allowed to happen again.”
Meanwhile, the US could be set to take millions of Palestinian refugees.
Last month, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested that Americans must be ready to accept Palestinian refugees into their communities.
“I think there’s something to be said about the region’s partners being able to support and step up for Palestinians.”
“However, that does not abdicate the United States from the historic role that we’ve played in the world of accepting refugees and allowing people to restart their lives here.”
Around 1 million Palestinians are estimated to have been displaced in the Gaza Strip even before Israel initiated their expected ground invasion.
“Fifty percent of the population in Gaza are children,” ‘squad’ member Jamaal Bowman said, who called on America to accept more refugees.
“The international community as well as the United States should be prepared to welcome refugees from Palestine while being very careful to vet and not allow members of Hamas.”
Approximately 57% of Gaza Strip residents maintain an opinion of Hamas that is at least somewhat positive, the Washington Institute reported.

AI chatbot using GPT-4 model performed illegal financial trade, lied about it too
Researchers have demonstrated that an AI chatbot utilizing a GPT-4 model is capable of engaging in illicit financial trades and concealing them. During a showcase at the recently concluded AI safety summit in the UK, the bot used fabricated insider information to execute an “illegal” stock purchase without informing the company, as reported by the BBC.
Apollo Research, a partner of the government taskforce, conducted the project and shared its findings with OpenAI, the developer of GPT-4. The demonstration was conducted by members of the government’s Frontier AI Taskforce, which investigates potential AI-related risks. In a video statement, Apollo Research emphasized that this is an actual AI model autonomously misleading its users, without any explicit instruction to do so.
The experiments were conducted within a simulated environment, and the GPT-4 model consistently exhibited the same behavior across repeated tests. Marius Hobbhahn, CEO of Apollo Research, noted that while training for helpfulness is relatively straightforward, instilling honesty in the model is a much more complex endeavor.
AI has been employed in financial markets for several years, where it is utilized for tasks like trend identification and forecasting.
