Pentagon says accounting error frees up $6.2 billion for Ukraine military aid
The Department of Defense (DOD) said on Tuesday an accounting error revealed last month overestimated U.S. military aid to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion by $6.2 billion.
Why it matters: The "valuation errors," as the Pentagon described them, will allow it to send additional military aid packages to Ukraine, which earlier this month embarked on its long-awaited counteroffensive against Russian forces in occupied territories.
However, the error frustrated top Republicans on the House Foreign Affairs and Armed Services committees, who said the extra assistance should have been given to Ukraine before its counteroffensive.
It also has drawn criticism from other members of Congress who have previously backed plans to oppose future aid packages to Ukraine.
What they're saying: Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said in a press briefing Tuesday that the error occurred when, "in a significant number of cases," U.S. military officials overvalued U.S. assistance to Ukraine by using the replacement cost of transferred equipment and not the equipment's book value.
She said the equipment was overvalued by $2.6 billion in fiscal year 2022 and by $3.6 billion in fiscal year 2023.
Singh said after the error was discovered on March 31, the DOD's comptroller reissued guidance on how sent equipment should be valued.
By the numbers: Since the start of Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the U.S. has given Ukraine approximately $40 billion in security assistance, according to the Department of State earlier this month.
Roughly $22 billion of the assistance has been through physical equipment from DOD stockpiles transferred through 37 presidential drawdowns.
The assistance, as well as equipment transfers and training from dozens of other countries, has been critical in Ukraine's ability to defend itself against the invasion and has allowed it to make new gains in the early phase of its counteroffensive.
Yes, but: Partisan politics, inflamed by an upcoming election year, may threaten future assistance to Ukraine, Axios' Zachary Basu reports.
Former President Trump, the frontrunner to win the Republican nomination for 2024, said last month that he would "settle" the invasion within 24 hours of becoming president — though he did not explain how he would do so.
The big picture: Republican voters overall have grown more hostile toward military assistance to Ukraine, with 44% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents saying the U.S. has given it too much aid in a recent survey by Pew Research Center.
Overall, however, nearly half (47%) of Americans either said that the U.S. has provided the right amount of assistance or that it should give more.

Developing: 100 Envelopes with White Powder Sent to Kansas Republican Lawmakers, President Donald Trump and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas
On Friday night the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) reported that 30 Kansas legislators were sent envelopes containing white powder.
KBI agents working alongside the FBI, KDHE, OSFM, Kansas National Guard, KHP, and several local police departments, sheriff’s offices, and fire departments have responded after mail was received by legislators and other public officials containing a suspicious white powder.
As of Sunday night approximately 100 envelopes with white powder were sent to Kansas legislators and public officials.
Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach also received a letter with the white powder.
The media ignored this story over the weekend.
President Trump and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas were also sent envelopes with white powder.
This did not make any headlines. Wonder why?
The AP reported:
About 100 letters containing suspicious white powder have been sent to lawmakers and other public officials across Kansas, officials said.
No injuries have been reported, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. It had counted more than 30 letters as of late Friday afternoon and increased the tally to 100 as of Sunday.
In a Facebook post Sunday, the bureau said preliminary tests on the substance were negative for common dangerous toxins.
In emails sent to legislators and obtained by The Topeka Capital-Journal, Tom Day, director of Legislative Administrative Services, said the Kansas Highway Patrol had informed his office of the letters, which contain a return address of either Kansas City or Topeka.

Comer Slams FBI Heavily Redacting Unclassified Records Related to Biden Bribery Scheme
WASHINGTON—House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) issued the following statement after reviewing two unclassified, FBI-generated FD-1023 forms that are related to the June 30, 2020 FD-1023 form that memorializes a confidential human source’s conversations with a foreign national who claimed to have bribed then-Vice President Joe Biden:
“Today the FBI brought two unclassified FD-1023 forms that were heavily redacted to a secure facility to be reviewed. What is the FBI hiding from Congress? Americans have lost confidence in the FBI’s ability to enforce the law impartially and the FBI’s secrecy shows that they aren’t interested in regaining their trust. The FBI must provide unredacted copies of these records and answers about what investigative actions were taken to verify these serious bribery allegations against President Biden.”

Hunter Biden to Plead Guilty in Deal: 2 Tax Counts, 1 Gun Charge
Hunter Biden, 53, son of President Joe Biden, has agreed to plead guilty to two federal tax violation charges and one violation of gun laws, per reports Tuesday morning.
Biden will plead guilty to willful failure to pay federal income tax — most likely on his foreign earnings — and will enter a “pretrial diversion program” regarding his gun crime, indicating that he will face no jail time.
Biden’s dubious business exploits came to light during the Obama administration, after he was discharged from the Navy for drug use and immediately found employment on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
Reporters briefly questioned the White House about Hunter Biden’s role, given that his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, had been placed in charge of Ukraine policy under President Barack Obama. State Department officials complained about the conflict of interest, but were told that the Vice President was grieving for his other son, Beau Biden, who died after a battle with brain cancer. The issue was never resolved.
President Donald Trump raised the question of Hunter Biden’s role with then-newly-installed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2019 — an overture for which House Democrats impeached the president.
Trump’s concerns were vindicated by the discovery and publication in 2020 of a laptop apparently belonging to Hunter Biden, which contained emails and other records documenting his business interests. But Silicon Valley social media companies, and the mainstream media itself, suppressed and censored the story, and intelligence figures created the false impression that it was Russian propaganda. After the election, Hunter Biden admitted that he had been under investigation for tax violations, but the Bidens continued to deny claims of corruption.
Critics also pointed out that Hunter Biden had likely lied on a federal gun purchase form when lying about his addiction to drugs. The topic surfaced periodically as President Biden vowed to take executive action on guns.
The plea deal will likely involve Hunter Biden admitting to misdemeanor charges that will keep him from jail — and will avoid a trial. President Biden could pardon his son at any point, voiding any criminal consequences.
News of the plea deal emerged less than two weeks after the Department of Justice indicted former President Donald Trump on felony charges with lengthy prison terms related to his handling of presidential documents.
